December has five Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays this year. That’s unusual, as you might expect. Pointless and uninteresting, sure, but unusual. In fact, it was suggested on Facebook (yes, I’m railing on Facebook again today) that it only occurs once every 823 years. OK, that might push it past the border into Interestingland.
Except it’s not true. And when you think about it, it can’t be true.
Enough, already.
Enough judging a man in his 50s for an isolated incident, or even several of them, that may or may not have happened when he was a teenager.
Enough judging a woman for daring to have a smile on her face at some point in time when the most important thing in her life is her allegations of being assaulted.
Enough giving credence to everyone who supports our own preconceived values and principles. Enough dismissing and/or excoriating everyone who opposes them.
The RMS Titanic was the largest ocean liner of its day. It was four times the size of the ships that set the standard when laws regarding lifeboats were written. So the company provided the legally required number of lifeboats when it set off on its maiden voyage in April 1914. There was room on the ship for more, and the company fully intended to supply the “extra” lifeboats when the law required it. But on that fateful day, they knowingly (and legally) set off for New York with one-fourth the lifeboats they knew they needed.
