You may have seen the reports about actresses Lori Laughlin (“Full House”) and Felicity Huffman (“Desperate Housewives”) being caught up in a standardized test scandal. At the time of this writing, Huffman had actually been arrested. It seems (and as much as I criticize those who leap to conclusions in this space, I hasten to add — innocent until proven guilty) some people were paying for special consideration so their children could get good grades on their ACT or SAT.
Simplicity, as pointed out to me recently by Bro. Ed Bragwell, is the opposite of duplicity. Yet again, Hal slaps himself in the face and wonders how something so obviously true and practical escaped his notice for 52 years.

Social media has given a voice to people who take great pleasure in being obnoxious. Space fails to provide a comprehensive proof of this concept; for our purposes here, I will limit my frame of reference to those who take pictures of themselves doing precisely what a sign is instructing people not to do. Walking on the grass, swimming, smoking, the situational prohibitions run the gamut. And the existence of the sign more or less implies that the behavior is not necessarily unlawful; people are simply asked to choose a different time and/or place.
Nope. “Look at me! I’m a rebel! I break rules! No one can tell me what to do!” As the saying goes, it’s all fun until someone gets eaten by an alligator.
The RMS Titanic was the largest ocean liner of its day. It was four times the size of the ships that set the standard when laws regarding lifeboats were written. So the company provided the legally required number of lifeboats when it set off on its maiden voyage in April 1914. There was room on the ship for more, and the company fully intended to supply the “extra” lifeboats when the law required it. But on that fateful day, they knowingly (and legally) set off for New York with one-fourth the lifeboats they knew they needed.
