Opportunity

So, I mention a restaurant in the area that serves good food, and I am flooded with reader feedback!  Everyone likes to hear about a new place to eat, I guess.  That’s not surprising, though.  We all eat, and we all prefer (all things being equal) to eat food we like.  So why not jump at a new opportunity?

If only I could use that little snippet of life as an idea for an article …

How about this — Christians “hunger and thirst for righteousness” (Matthew 5:6).  But “righteousness” comes in different flavors, different textures.  It’s all filling, because it all comes from the ultimate revelation of grace and truth, Jesus Christ (John 1:17).  And so it is all satisfying in its own way.  But that doesn’t mean it has to become stale or mundane.  We should try to keep it fresh and vibrant.

Here’s an example.  Say you have been working on your personal Bible knowledge (2 Peter 3:18).  Great.  Keep at it.  But why not try your hand at teaching?  It’s the natural next step (Hebrews 5:12-14).  Opportunities abound, both in the church and in your personal life.

Variety is the spice of life, they say.  And I can make a strong argument that variety is essential to a full, balanced spiritual diet.  But should I have to?  It ought to be a pleasure for us to seek out new and different ways to become more Christlike.  And if someone comes along with an opportunity to expand our spiritual palate, we should look at that as equal parts duty, challenge and blessing — and seize the opportunity with both hands.
