I really need this election to come and go.  Despite my admonitions to everyone and his brother these days about keeping things in perspective, trusting in God through all situations, seeing ourselves as citizens of heaven and not of a disturbingly flawed America, still I find myself gawking at the latest earth-shattering rumor about the candidates and/or those near them.

Maybe I should try this again, if only for my sake.

There is no line on the ballot for king.  That slot is filled.  Our God and Father is ruler over all things on earth.  “For the kingdom is the LORD’s, and He rules over the nations” (Psalm 22:28).  As long as I have confidence in His power and sovereignty, I have no reason to fear any man.

His Son Jesus is “head over all things to the church” (Ephesians 1:22).  That means my job is to submit to Him and trust that He is an able custodian of my life.  The path that He chooses for me (however specifically or generally He may choose it) will work His will in my life and ultimately be to my benefit — that is, if I walk in that path with hope and confidence in Him.  If the church must stand against the evils of the day and suffer in the flesh for it, well, it won’t be the first time.

We as the people of God are assured that we will rule as well.  We “will judge the world” (1 Corinthians 6:2) — not in the same way God will, of course, but by making choices of faith that they were just as capable of making and yet chose not to.  I will “possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come” (Daniel 7:18).  I am going to come out just fine, if only I will be “faithful until death” (Revelation 2:20).

Just keep breathing, smiling, and believing.  We are in good hands.
