Thanks

This year I am giving thanks for some different sorts of things.  After all, 1 Thessalonians 5:18 reads, “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  If the Holy Spirit had meant to tell Paul to write, “in every good thing,” I’m sure that’s what Paul would have written.  So here goes.

I thank God for brethren who disagree with me politically, because they show the unifying power of Jesus Christ.

I thank God for political fanatics on both ends of the spectrum, because while they tear into each other in the parking lot I am getting the last lunch table.

I thank God for bad referees, because they remind me that life isn’t fair.  I will need that lesson one day in a situation that actually matters.

I thank God for political protesters, because they remind me how silly I look when I don’t get my way and then pitch a fit in response.

I thank God for brethren who complain, because they remind me how little time I spend thinking of others.

I thank God for celebrities, because without celebrities we would not know how important celebrities are.  (OK, that one might be a bit sarcastic.)

I thank God for politicians, because they show the price you must pay for selling your soul to the devil.

I thank God for gray hair, because it is a reminder of both the blessings of age and the inevitable passing of time.

I thank God for colonoscopies, because dignity is overrated.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
