For years I resisted the “layered” look. Considering the hot climates I have tended to occupy over the last half-century, wearing one shirt instead of two seemed the comfortable, reasonable approach. Plus it meant I didn’t have to buy more T-shirts. (Hal Hammons, famous tightwad. Surely we’ve met.)
Last week in this space I encouraged the “one-talent” Christians out there to not lose heart, but rather to rejoice in the “small things” they may be able to do in service to God and to the church. I thought I would follow up today with some specifics.
Again, these are things that virtually any Christian can do.
“Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.’ ” — John 8:34-36
Sinners do not properly understand the principle of being enslaved to sin. They know nothing other than slavery. They have found contentment and even joy in slavery. They have convinced themselves that sin is the inevitable and preferred state of mankind. By committing themselves to slavery, though, they are prohibiting themselves from living the life that they were, in the most literal of senses, born to live.
I got my eyes dilated during a recent trip to the eye doctor. On my way out they asked if I wanted some eye shades. I politely declined. And then I opened the door. Wow. It felt like someone had hit me in the face with a hammer. I went back for the shades.
